Can you really experience Matera in one day? Yes. Will you see everything? No, but that’s not the point. Matera is not a puzzle to complete as fast as possible. It is a place to walk through slowly to enjoy it properly.
At the same time, even if you only have 1 day in Matera, you’ll be able to enjoy it – just don’t rush through an infinite checklist. Follow a smart route, leave space for surprise, and let the city do the rest.
This Matera itinerary is made for travellers who want the essential, but not only the obvious.
Early morning: start from the Sassi
If you can, start early, before the city gets too busy and hot.
The Sassi of Matera are the heart of the experience: cave dwellings carved into limestone rock, stone alleys, staircases and views that change every few steps.
Begin around Piazza Vittorio Veneto, one of the easiest starting points for a Matera self-guided walking tour. From here, look over the Sasso Barisano and slowly descend into the old districts. Don’t try to understand everything immediately. Just walk. Some streets are actually the roofs of the houses below, some doors open into cave homes, some alleys reveal churches carved into the rock.
The Sassi are beautiful, and also layered, complex, alive.
Mid-morning: choose one cave experience
With only one day in Matera, choose one strong stop.
Visit a restored casa grotta, to understand how families lived in the Sassi until the 1950s.
Or perhaps the Palombaro Lungo, the huge underground cistern beneath Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Matera is not only carved into stone: it is built around water and underground architecture: your visit will allow you to learn more about this aspect.
Late morning: walk toward the Cathedral
From the Sassi area, climb slowly toward the Cathedral of Matera.
The walk itself is part of the experience. Every turn gives you a different perspective: houses stacked on top of each other, cave churches, balconies, shadows, silence.
At the top, stop for the view. This is when you understand why Matera has been used as a movie set so many times, from biblical films to James Bond.
Lunch: step outside the tourist flow
After a morning in the Sassi, you will probably be hungry and tired. This is why many travellers sit at the first crowded place they find on the most touristy streets.
Our suggestion? Don’t make that rookie mistake: step slightly outside the flow and reach us at Materia Prima Bistrot. We are located in the centre of Matera, a few steps from the Sassi and near the church of San Giovanni Battista. Close enough to reach easily, far enough from the chaos.

Afternoon: find a different side of Matera
After lunch, you can continue through the Sassi or look for some unusual things to do in Matera.
If you love contemporary art, visit MUSMA, the museum of contemporary sculpture inside cave spaces. If you prefer something quirkier, look for hidden street art, visit the Church of Purgatory with its skull-covered façade, or explore one of the city’s contemporary galleries.
You will discover that Matera is ancient, but it is not stuck in the past.
Sunset: choose your ending
At sunset, choose based on your energy.
If you still want to explore, go to Belvedere Murgia Timone, on the opposite side of the ravine. From there, the Sassi will appear to you as one sculpted body of stone. Check timing, transport and daylight before going, especially without a guide or car.
If you want to slow down instead, stay in town and do something very Italian: stop for aperitivo. After a full day of walking, an aperitivo in Matera is not just a drink, it is a well-deserved reset.
