Matera nightlife: how to enjoy the city after dark

Matera nightlife ph. by Kristijan Nikodinovski

Matera is a place that changes when the sun goes down. The stone softens, the streets become quieter, the lights come out one by one and the city feels less like a tourist destination and more like a place to stay in for a while.

If you are wondering what Matera’s nightlife looks like, forget the idea of packed clubs and all-night parties. Here, the evening has a slower rhythm: sunset walks, long dinners, wine bars, cocktails, outdoor tables and one last stroll through the Sassi before going back to your hotel.

That is what makes nights in Matera so special.

Start with the city itself

The best Matera evenings usually begin even before dinner. Stay outside a little longer and watch the light change over the Sassi. The warm color of the stone slowly gives way to shadows, illuminated alleys and viewpoints that acquire a theatrical feel after dark.

You do not need a complicated plan or itinerary: walk through Sasso Barisano or Sasso Caveoso, pass through Piazza Vittorio Veneto, stop when the view opens up and let the city set the pace.

Sunset and the blue hour are also among the best times to appreciate Matera without the intensity of the daytime crowds. The streets remain alive, but the atmosphere becomes softer and more intimate.

Then comes dinner.

In Matera, dinner is part of the evening itself, not something to rush through before the “real” night starts. Choose somewhere you actually want to spend time, order whatever tickles your appetite (here are some suggestions on what to eat in Matera), try local ingredients or something more contemporary, and leave room for the possibility that the evening may continue with a drink afterwards.

Matera nightlife gives its best with a drink in your hands

The real character of Matera nightlife is found in its wine bars, bistrots and small places where you can sit, talk and stay longer than expected.

You might start with a glass of wine and end up sharing a bottle with someone you didn’t even know before. Or order a Spritz after dinner. Maybe you will try a local beer. And then move somewhere else for a Negroni. Or simply linger where you are, if the atmosphere feels right.

At Materia Prima Bistrot, this slower kind of Matera’s nightlife is exactly what we like. We are in the centre of the city, close to the Sassi but slightly removed from the busiest flow, which makes our bistrot a natural stop before or after an evening walk.

Our drink list follows the same philosophy as the food: familiar enough to feel easy, different enough to stay interesting. You will find natural wines, local and independent beers, gluten-free and alcohol-free options, and cocktails ranging from classic Spritz, Americano and Negroni to less obvious combinations.

The idea is not to build a complicated drinking experience. It is simply to offer something good for different moods. A glass of wine if you want to keep dinner going. A cold beer after hours of walking. Or a cocktail, if you are not ready to call it a night.

One more walk before going home

One of the nicest things about going out in Matera at night is that the evening does not necessarily end when you leave the bar. The city itself remains part of the experience. You can walk back to your accommodation through the centre, return to a viewpoint you saw during the day, cross the Sassi again when the streets are quieter and the lights inside the stone houses have transformed the landscape.

This slower version of Matera nightlife is especially suited to couples, solo travellers and small groups who prefer conversation to noise and atmosphere to crowds. Matera may not be the destination for people looking for clubs until sunrise – but if your ideal evening is a good dinner, a bottle shared with friends, a relaxed drink and a city worth walking through after dark, you will probably understand its appeal immediately.

And if that sounds like your kind of night, why not make Materia Prima Bistrot part of it? Book your table in advance and spend your evening with us. Dinner, drinks, or just one last glass before heading back into Matera’s nightlife.
